interweaving structures
a network of anthracite-coloured main paths and beige-coloured side paths interweaves old and new structures, while simultaneously creating open spaces offering different qualities. the different colours provide orientation and create zones.
small open spaces in front of the main entrances of the new residential building serve as informal meeting points for residents and neighbours.
in the inner courtyard, the interweaving structures creates a central community space open to all generations.
the extension of the loggia north of the tower leads to a piece of combination furniture, comprising a pergola, a sandbox and a wooden deck; south of the tower, it leads to the easily visible children’s play area.
additional wooden decks at key intersections act as smaller meeting points and landmarks.

promoting a sense of community
the design of all the spaces aims at promoting a sense of community by ensuring that they can be used by all residents.
various playing areas, such as the children’s area in the community space, the bocce court in the northern open space, and grassy play areas are welcoming to all generations.
moreover, raised beds in the eastern part of the complex and near the orchard are available to residents for growing fruit and vegetables, and offer yet another space for communication.

guiding trees
the residential area is permeated and, at the same time, structured by different types of trees.
smaller trees are planted in the area of the underground car park and form groves at key landmarks.
tall canopy trees, such as sophora, betula, paulownia, gleditsia and celtis, frame the complex and highlight the entrances to the individual buildings.
in the playing area, a grove of amelanchier trees provides shade and, with its typical autumn colours, creates a fascinating atmosphere throughout the year.
in the orchard south of the complex, the existing apple trees have been complemented with additional fruit trees free for the residents to use.

85 rental flats funded through a special funding scheme, playground for children and adolescents, music rehearsal space and cinema

in dialogue with the attemsgasse 43 project, whose elliptical shape enhances the lighting conditions in the inner corner of the corner building, the structure of the building on attemsgasse 39 faces west with all flats boasting a natural view of the kirschblütenpark in the north-west. on the south-eastern side of the building, loggias behind the metal façade create a nuanced, two-sided and vertically oriented room configuration with flexibly arranged loggia plates, allowing for a multistorey room design and diverse perspectives.

the residential building is located in a densely populated urban area. nonetheless, it opens up to the outside by way of spacious access and communication spaces as well as a continuous glass facade in front of the loggias. the key architectural element is the ‘green lung’. it extends all the way from the green inner courtyard to the interior of the building and the top floor, and serves as an access point that also provides natural lighting. combined with intelligent lighting design and differentiated floor plans, this residential building reflects the architects’ commitment to urban living.

in addition to a focus on economy, this project emphasises spatial qualities: these include communal areas for communication in the stairwell, on the one hand, and the flexibility of the flats, on the other. the essential design idea here is the opportunity to adapt the size of the flats to the changing needs of different families and generations through optional function spaces provided in advance. the possibility of integrating the bathrooms in the living areas represents a particular objective of the architects.

the building is conceived as an earth house with few outside surfaces to minimise heat loss, and with the roof surfaces interpreted as horizontal extensions of the slope. the yard between the two structures follows the original shape of the slope before the building was constructed, thus preserving the original terrain and allowing the building to merge with the surrounding landscape. light shafts in the roof bathe the underground rooms in natural light. the interior is completely made of wood and is partly the result of a do-it-yourself project.

the solar roof project in the fifth district of vienna is a prototypical extension of the top floor of a building from the late 19th century. the main focus is on energy-efficient development: the old roof truss was removed and replaced with a rear-ventilated, reinforced-concrete construction. large-scale glazing and solar panels harness solar power, while ventilation flaps enable cross ventilation. the open-plan design in the kitchen areas and bathrooms, designed only as function zones, allows for the neutral use of the rooms.
