Situated in the area of the Kaiser Franz Joseph Hospital, the compact and transparent volume of this school for 600 students effectively upgrades its surroundings which are affected by heavy traffic. The building is consistently organized in layers: All the teaching spaces are oriented towards the park side of the hospital, whereas all ancillary spaces are organised in spatial figures loosely placed towards the urban street space. The entire building is a coherent open spatial volume that provides space for differentiated communication between teachers and students. An intelligent fire protection concept with self-closing, sliding fire protection doors and a fire smoke ventilation system that vents through the roof facilitated the strategy of a 4-storey open hall. A technically sophisticated ventilation system ensures the supply of fresh conditioned air for all the classrooms. A heat recovery system utilises the energy generated in the entire building and the warmth given off by the students to achieve a substantial reduction in the amount of energy required for heating

to accommodate the rooms of the klangforum wien, much of the four-storey building was gutted and adapted. a previous production room featuring abundant rooflights was redesigned to serve as a spacious rehearsal room and studio. the wooden sprung floor in this room reflects the architects’ expertise in room acoustics particularly well: the previous asphalt flooring, the technical facilities and the air volume are now covered by soft spruce wood. the upper building floors house the administrative offices of the klangforum.

a reduction to the essentials with carefully selected materials and exquisite workmanship, enhanced by a discreet colour design is the guiding principle of this project and clearly shows in the architects’ plan. well supplied with fresh air distributed via the floor, occupants of these formally closed rooms can take a deep breath and – in keeping with the tradition of the building – engage in focused mental work. the design concept for the box office of the graz opera house (implemented in 1999) turned the relationship between the audience and the stage upside down, paralleling konrad bayer’s play die begabten zuschauer (1959): the box office represents the ‘stage’, which the visitor enters under a spotlight, thus becoming a central character, an actor. they collect their tickets from the box office staff, who are sitting in a ‘loge’ behind a desk clad in red velvet.
